Clothes are confusing - apparently

Why am I writing a blog entry at 1am, you ask?

Because I didn't put the girls in their normal pajamas at bed time, that's why!

For the first time in weeks, we are finally having some nice sunny weather. It was much warmer in our house  at bed time than usual, so I didn't want to put the girls in their blanket sleeper footie pajamas. They were wearing long sleeve onesies and some cotton pants all day so I just let them sleep in their clothes. They went to bed just fine.

Sophia woke up around 11pm crying a little. When I went to check on her, she looked really confused. She was sitting in her crib with one sock in her hand. She handed the sock to me, and I put it back on her. I had her lay back down, then I left the room.

Around midnight, I heard, "all done, all done," coming from the girls' bedroom.  My first thought was..... wha??? Why is Sophia saying all done? I went into their room to find her standing in her crib with both socks in her hands, just like she does at the end of nap. She got so loud that it woke Morgan and Rachel up too. They both stood up in their cribs and joined Sophia in the "all done" chorus.

I told them, "not all done, it's still time to sleep." Then I left the room saying, "night night."

You can pretty much guess that they all started screaming, right? This went on for several minutes before they stopped crying and started in again will the "all done" again.

This had never happened before so I wasn't sure what to do. That's when I realized they were confused because they weren't wearing their normal pajamas. It sounds crazy, but it's so true. We always put them in zipper jammies at night. So I went downstairs and got clean diapers and their pjs. I changed each of them and got them in their snuggly jammies and did our night night song. Oh and I have to add that when I got Sophia's pajamas on her, she sighed and smiled and got herself all cozy in her crib. It was like she was relieved to be wearing them. This time, when I left the room..... they didn't cry at all.

I'm still waiting for them to fall back asleep though. Well, correction: I'm still waiting for Sophia to fall back asleep. Usually if she wakes up at night, It's for at least an hour. Sometimes two hours.

Hmmm.... this could be a long night.

You can bet your butt I will NOT be making this pajama mistake again! If it's too warm at night, we just might have to turn on the air conditioner a little earlier in the season!

We found ducks!

My friend Deana has BBB triplets who are 19 months old. I love that we live so close to each other. (Bonus is that we are each other's personal Starbucks delivery person!)

Yesterday, we found an awesome walking trail near our neighborhood that is right next to a creek that has ducks. The kids really enjoyed being out and seeing all the ducks and birds. There was lots of pointing and quacking going on between our trios! We've decided that this needs to be a regular activity. It breaks up an otherwise monotonous afternoon! So much fun!

In other awesome news.... Bob and I have decided that his work schedule needs to change. For the past two years, he's been going into the office around 9am and not coming home until almost 7pm. That doesn't give me any help with dinner or baths, and he doesn't get to spend much time with the girls before they go to bed. This later schedule was working for us for most of the last couple of years since he'd have me sleep in late if the girls woke me up a lot at night. It's now a rare occasion if one of them wakes up in the middle of the night! So now, he'll going to the office much earlier and will be home in time for dinner every night! I am so excited about this! Can I get a WOO HOO?!

The Autism Question

I've really been struggling with the autism question lately. A few months ago, I was really concerned about Rachel. However, over the past couple of months, she's grown so much and is communicating with us pretty well that I just put the word, "autism" in the back of my mind. Yes, her food issues are classic autistic behaviors but her other behaviors just don't really seem to match up.

This past week, I got a phone call from our case worker. I have been lacking on my updates lately, but we've been having visits from Stephanie (the food therapist) and Mila (the behaviorist) for the last couple of weeks. Anyway, our case worker has received feedback from both Stephanie and Mila and they are still concerned that Rachel is somewhere on the autism spectrum. It frustrates me a lot, but at the same time, I agree with them......to an extent. They mostly only see Rach when they are playing and working with her about eating. This really stresses her out. What can I say.... She runs away from bread and totally freaks out if I present a food she's not comfortable with. I'm not even kidding. I wish I were kidding. Unless you have been here to witness these food issues or have a child who has these issues, I really can't even explain the difficulty it is to get her to eat. I just can't. Sometimes I feel so alone in this, but it is what it is and I'm just doing the best I can.

So back to the phone call. Our CW wanted me to do the M-CHAT test for Rachel. I hadn't heard of it before, but went ahead and answered the yes or no questions. Honestly, I was a little angry that I was being asked to do this. I went ahead with it basically to prove that she's NOT on the spectrum. Unfortunately, she failed 7 of the questions. Here is a copy of the test..... ( I got this by googling MCHAT and then copied it.)

1. Does your child enjoy being swung, bounced on your knee, etc.? Yes____ No____

2. Does your child take an interest in other children? Yes____ No____

3. Does your child like climbing on things, such as up stairs? Yes____ No____

4. Does your child enjoy playing peek-a-boo/hide-and-seek? Yes____ No____

5. Does your child ever pretend, for example, to talk on the phone or take care of dolls, or pretend other things? Yes____ No____

6. Does your child ever use his/her index finger to point, to ask for something? Yes____ No____

7. Does your child ever use his/her index finger to point, to indicate interest in something? Yes____ No____

8. Can your child play properly with small toys (e.g. cars or bricks) without just mouthing, fiddling, or dropping them? Yes____ No____

9. Does your child ever bring objects over to you (parent) to show you something? Yes____ No____

10. Does your child look you in the eye for more than a second or two? Yes____ No____

11. Does your child ever seem oversensitive to noise? (e.g., plugging ears) Yes____ No____

12. Does your child smile in response to your face or your smile? Yes____ No____

13. Does your child imitate you? (e.g., you make a face-will your child imitate it?) Yes____ No____

14. Does your child respond to his/her name when you call? Yes____ No____

15. If you point at a toy across the room, does your child look at it? Yes____ No____

16. Does your child walk? Yes____ No____

17. Does your child look at things you are looking at? Yes____ No____

18. Does your child make unusual finger movements near his/her face? Yes____ No____

19. Does your child try to attract your attention to his/her own activity? Yes____ No____

20. Have you ever wondered if your child is deaf? Yes____ No____

21. Does your child understand what people say? Yes____ No____

22. Does your child sometimes stare at nothing or wander with no purpose? Yes____ No____

23. Does your child look at your face to check your reaction when faced with something unfamiliar? Yes____ No____

Rachel missed questions 5, 6, 7, 11, 13, 19, 23.  I was told there is cause for concern if a child fails 3 of the questions. Hearing this broke my heart. I realize that if she is on the spectrum, she's very high functioning. Almost all of her behaviors, other than food, are totally normal. She may be delayed, but otherwise, she is just like any other kid. We actually call her "Sophia 2 months ago." It's our way of saying that she usually does exactly what Sophia does, just a couple of months later.....Other than the eating, of course.

I talked the results over with the girls' entire team of therapists, and we've all agreed that it's best to get her tested by a psychologist. I'm tired of the back and forth and the wondering if she's on the spectrum or not. Having her tested will just help us better determine the right path to take with the therapies she's receiving. Plus, in the last couple of days, I've noticed behaviors that would have had her passing questions 5 and 23. So I know we're only failing 5 questions. And some of those questions, Sophia wouldn't have passed a couple of months ago and now she totally does. I'm not in denial here. I know that Rachel's eating issues are cause for concern. I know there is the possibility she is on the spectrum. I still think she just has some serious texture issues and learned behaviors about food.

We have to wait until the end of May for the appointment with the psychologist. I'm going to try and put this issue aside until then. I need to keep focusing on all the positives!

Randoms.....

Last Friday, Sophia said Rachel's name for the first time. We were sitting at the dinner table and Rachel reached over and took Sophia's plate. Sophia looked at me and then reached to grab the plate back. Then she said, "no noooo wayychaa." I think my heart melted right then!

Rachel is saying her own name. She says it like, "Raychooo." I'll say, "Rachel, come to mommy so I can change your diaper," and she'll look at me all cute and say, "Raychoo." Whenever I say her name now, she says it.

I've talked with my doctor and have decided to go the conservative route with surgery. I'm not planning a hysterectomy at this time. The recovery time is just too much for me right now, so we've decided to do a laparascopy and remove scar tissue and endometriosis. This surgery should buy me a few more pain free years. (I hope.) However, I did give him permission to do the hysterectomy if things don't look so good in there. I have to go and sign papers on April 4th and then the surgery will be scheduled after that. What are the papers for? haha... As long as I'm having surgery, I decided that I might as well get my tubes tied. It may not be the best thing for someone with endo, but at least I won't have to worry about any "surprises." haha......I am closed for business!

Morgan is in love with Barney. I really need to take a picture with her and the stuffed Barney we have. She has claimed the Barney doll as her own. She carries him around all day and sings the, "I love you, you love me" song. She also likes to do the "Dino Dance," which is one of the fun Barney songs. She's gotten really good at jumping up and down and dancing and turning around to the music. Yeah, I need to get her on video!

Sophia and Rachel are paci free. Since they girls were around 13 months old (I think), I only allowed them to use a paci in their crib during nap or night sleep. Recently, they all started to chew through their pacis. I was buying new ones almost every time I went shopping. It got expensive and I realized it was ridiculous that I was buying so many for 2 year olds. So I decided that when they chewed through their last pacis, that was going to be it. Sophia was the first to chew hers. I thought it would be a rough couple of days for her without one, but she didn't care at all. She totally surprised me. Same thing with Rachel. She had chewed through hers a couple of days after Sophia. They have both been sleeping for naps and night sleep just fine without them. They don't even care. Morgan, on the other hand, will likely be a different story. She is addicted to hers. She has always used a different kind than her sisters. She sucks on one and holds another in her hand. She doens't chew through them as often, but she has 2 left....and I'm NOT buying any more. Honestly, I'm dreading the day I have to take her paci away. I'm going to see if I can have her snuggle with Barney instead of use a paci....who knows. I'm not looking forward to it. Plus, Morgan is such an easy kid that I um...(don't tell Bob) ...um...might cave in with her and get her more if she needs it.

That's the latest and greatest going on in the Flakes house! I must sign off and get myself some sleep now!

Poop Initiation, Oh My!

Well, it happened. I've been initiated into the "toddler gets naked, takes off diaper and throws poop on the floor" club.

Trust me, this isn't a club you want to join.

I put the girls down for their 1pm nap this afternoon. Then, as usual,  I went downstairs and made myself some lunch. While I was eating and playing on my laptop, I heard Sophia say, "poo poo, poo poo," over and over again. I grabbed a diaper and some wipes and figured I'd change her diaper and then she'd fall asleep. It's not unusual for Sophia to let one loose at the beginning of nap, so this was just another normal day for us..... or so I thought.

I keep black out shades on the girls' window so it was still pretty dark when I walked into the room. I smelled poop as soon as I opened the door!  However, I looked down and saw what I thought was Rachel's purple paci on the floor in front of her crib. So I reached down to pick it up so I could give it back to her before changing Sophia's diaper.

That's when I realized I'd picked up a turd............not a paci!

I started to panic a little on the inside, but then I looked over at Sophia saying, "poo poo, poo poo, poo poo" and I saw that she was naked from the waist down and had her diaper in her hand. She had taken her pants and diaper off and then had thrown the poop ON THE FLOOR!

I was in complete shock, but started to laugh so hard at the same time. I've read several blogs and Facebook status updates from a lot of my fellow mom friends about toddlers who took their diaper off and played with their poo. I was actually dumb enough to think that it would never happen to ME! This is the kind of thing that happens to other people, right? Now I'm one of those "other" people. Enjoy it while it lasts people. YOUR turn is coming soon!

So since the poo was already in my hand and the bathroom is just right across the hall, I quickly flushed it and ran to grab Sophia since I didn't know what else I was dealing with. I leaned her over the sink and washed her hands (and mine) really good and then used wet wipes on her face even though there was no evidence that she had touched her face. I cleaned her up and got a diaper back on her and put her in clean clothes. Then I pulled all the blankets and sheets off of her bed. Once she was back in her crib, I realized I had better look around on the floor to make sure there were no other pieces of poo. I had already pulled her whole mattress out of the crib so I knew it was clean. Thankfully, I didn't find (or smell) anything else.

Needless to say.........Tomorrow at nap time, I'm duct taping her diaper closed and putting a onesie on under her pants.

In fact, maybe I should start to use duct tape on all three. Can you imagine if they had all done this at the same time? I can't even THINK about that.

This Mommy isn't messing around!

Oh and quick update about Rachel. She is doing so much better and has recovered from her pneumonia. I'm happy to report that all three are healthy!!! Whew!

Rachel has Pneumonia

Sophia and Rachel have had a cough since last Friday. It seemed to get better over the weekend and then got worse again on Monday. Suddenly yesterday, Rachel developed a fever. I noticed she wasn't being herself that morning. She didn't want to eat, and she was just sitting in a corner with her eyes all glassy. I had changed her diaper an hour before the fever came. She had felt fine. When I noticed her just sitting in the corner, poor baby was just burning up with a temp of 102.5.

I tried giving her tylenol, but since I have to hide it either in food or a drink, she wouldn't take it because she just didn't want anything. I worried that her fever was too high so I was determined to get some Tyelnol in her. I ended up feeling like the worst mother in the world because I tried to force it on her and she threw up. I put her down for a nap and called the advice nurse at our pediatrician's office. She was concerned and decided to have our doctor call us. He was concerned that she might have some sort of infection since she developed a fever a few days into her "cold."

So my sister came over to babysit Morgan and Sophia and I headed to the doctor with Rachel. By this time, poor Rachel was miserable and her fever had even gone up. While Dr. A was checking her ears, and listening to her lungs, she was so upset and ended up throwing up all over my leg. Oh well, that's part of motherhood, right?

He didn't find anything wrong with her ears and her lungs sounded okay to him. However, he had a suspicion that she may still have pneumonia so he sent us down the hall for an x-ray.  She did better than I thought she would during the x-ray. It was over pretty fast, so that was good.

We went back to the exam room and Dr. A came in and confirmed that she does have a mild case of pneumonia in her right lung. I was shocked. She was literally running all over the house the day before.

It's been difficult getting her antibiotics into her. As we all know, Rachel has issues with anything going into her mouth. There is NO WAY that she allows us to put a medicine dropper in there. I've tried and she throws up every time. I was able to mix it in with her yogurt yesterday. Today was a different story. She had no appetite almost all day. For breakfast, we mixed the meds into her milk. She only drank half of it. I ended up giving her a little bit more in some yogurt for lunch. After lunch, I couldn't get her to eat or drink anything for the rest of the day. I was pretty sure that I'd have to bring her back to the pedi's office for a shot. He had said that if she won't take her meds, that we'll have to have it injected into her. Finally, tonight around 9pm, she woke up and I was able to get her to eat a little with her meds.  I hope she will want to eat and drink tomorrow. I worry about my little peanut!

She did do a little better today with her energy at least. Her fever was down around 100 ish so that was better. I'm very thankful that Sophia's cough is better and she never got a fever. Morgan, so far, is healthy as can be! Let's hope she stays that way.

This has been a LONG week. I've barely had a few hours of sleep each night. As I type this, Sophia is awake and fussing. She has been waking up several times a night lately. Combine that with Rachel being sick and UGH for me and trying to sleep.

So I'm off to go tend to my sweeties. Hopefully, I can get Sophia back to sleep.

Ps... I'm not reading this to proof read so if I sound like a dumb a$$, I'm too sleepy to care. Oh and I almost forgot to mention that my sister rocks. When Rachel and I came home from the pedi's office, she had washed my dishes and cleaned the play room. I have the bestest sister!

Late night ramblings....

There are so many nights that I tell myself to sit down and write something. You know, something like.... Morgan is constantly singing the Barney "I love you, you love me song." You would think it's annoying, but she is so much cuter than the purple dinosaur that I could listen to her sing that song all day long. Hey, what do you know... I DO listen to her sing it all day long. I'm just so burnt out by the time I sit down at night, that blogging hasn't been a priority lately.

Rachel is really into counting. She counts to ten over and over again. My favorite thing is that she says, "sayyen" for "seven." Morgan does too. I love, love, love it and don't want to correct them.

Sophia really loves to say what things are. We have a book that has pictures of all sorts of things. She likes to say, " It's a butterfly," it's a banana... then she says "yaaaayyyyyy" when I say "good job." Her favorite food right now is chips. Not the most healthy thing, but that girl can eat cheddar sun chips like they are going out of style. She even asks for them. She'll come up to me and say, "chip, chip, chip." It's so cute. It's not so cute when I have to tell her no and she throws herself down on the floor to show me who she thinks is the boss.

I have two out of three who are sick again. I know! We were JUST sick. It's so frustrating. Sophia and Rachel have been coughing since the weekend. And to make things extra special, they started puking today. Poor girls are coughing so hard that they are puking. It took me until 11pm to get all three girls settled down and asleep tonight. The last 2 nights, I've only gotten about 2-3 hours of sleep. Those poor little coughers are keeping this mommy awake. It makes me so sad to see them sick again. So far, Morgan is in the clear. I'm wondering if they picked this up at the pediatrician's office last Friday when we had their two year old check up. The check up, by the way, went very well. I don't have their stats, but they were all between 25-28 pounds, which is in the normal range and Rachel is no longer considered underweight. Woo hoo for that! Ah, and would you believe they are all 36 1/2 inches tall. Hello basketball team!

Oh and last week Rachel pooped in the bathtub. I'm still surprised the girls are 2 years old and that has only happened twice. Not too poopy!

Hmm what else has been going?

I've kept the house clean for a week. Seriously! I should get an award for that. My sister and I went through the girls' toys and organized everything and tossed a bunch of the junk. Now everything is in bins and we don't have ALL their toys out at once anymore. It's actually really pleasant. I think the girls are able to focus on one thing at a time and not be sitting in a sea of toys everywhere. I'm also having them clean up the playroom each time we leave the room. They do really well with putting things away.

I've been cleaning the kitchen each night before I go to bed too. Well, not tonight. This is the first night in a week that I am letting the dishes sit there. It took me way too long to get the girls to sleep. No way am I going to go make noise in the kitchen!

Anyway, just having a clean house has been a huge accomplishment for me. I'm more tired and have less down time, but at least I'm not waking up to a messy kitchen or tripping over toys at 7am.

In other news, I'm most likely going to be having surgery pretty soon. I'm about to get TMI....so for you men-folk or women who don't want to read about girl parts, you may want to hit the X and close this window! You've been warned.

I have had so many issues since having three babies in one day. It started with seriously long and irregular bleeding for the first 18 or so months after the pregnancy. Then for the past year or so, I've been having horrible cramps. The past 3-4 cycles have been just terrible. A couple of weekends ago, I spent the entire weekend in bed curled up with a heating pad barely able to move. I thought I threw out my back because the cramping started there, but then it got worse and moved over to my right (front) side and all the way down my legs to my knees. I have a long history with Endometriosis and haven't had a "clean up" surgery in almost 10 years. I'm sure the c-section and cutting into my uterus didn't help one bit. Anyway, my doctor was advising a hysterectomy when I was bleeding for almost a year straight, but since I had triplets under a year old, surgery just wasn't in the cards. Now that they are 2, surgery still doesn't seem like a good idea, but I don't think I can handle all of this pain much longer. It's really getting worse. I could either continue to be in pain for who knows how long, or I could get it fixed and feel better once I recover from the surgery. So we're doing an ultrasound first to double check for issues and then we'll be doing either a laparoscopy to clean up any endo that likely has returned, or depending on how things look, my doctor may just do the full hysterectomy. I got that news today. It stresses me out because I know I need to have this done, but I just have a lot going on right now. I guess there never really is a good time to have body parts removed, is there? hahaha.... Gotta laugh so I don't cry.

Alright... it seems the girls have all settled into sleepy land, and after the last few nights of almost no sleep for me, I think I shall hit the sack myself. Here's to hoping the girls are feeling better tomorrow!
